The precepts of the Lord are right

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Ex. 20:1-17, Mt. 13:18-23. In Jesus we find a concrete way of being in union with God the Father through the power of the Holy Spirit. In order to show the special relationship which exists between God and His people, God gives the ten commandments. Today's first reading describes how the ten commandments are meant to help us to grow in relationship with God and with those around us. Unlike other ancient or modern systems of legislation which are impersonal, the Ten Commandments address us personally. The ten commandments are not meant to restrict our freedom, but to give us the freedom to worship God and show us His loving care for other members of the community. The Decalogue begins with, "I am the Lord your God, you shall not have other gods before me," as an injunction that demands our total dedication to God and commitment to His Word.

Thus, the Psalmist reminds us that we have nowhere else to go than to return to God and be dedicated to the Divine word because the word of God is what gives us life. Through the parable of the seed sown on various soil, today's Gospel describes how the words of God should take root within us so it can produce a good harvest. We can prepare ourselves for the word of God by making sure that we are not downtrodden by others, nor having many ways of the world which will choke the life out of the Divine word when it is shared with us. If we are to be His inheritance, we must make Him our ONLY GOD and allow ourselves to be fertilised and tilled so that we are open to the Divine word when it is continually presented to us. It means we must spend time with the Divine word each day, for it is not meant to restrict our freedom, but to give us the freedom to be in a better, more abundantly productive relationship with God and others.

May the Divine word find its root in us so that we may draw closer to God who loves us beyond our imagination! Amen!! Good morning, it is well with you!!!
