The Law of God is the Law of Love

The Law of God is the Law of Love

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

2 Cor. 3:4-11, Mt. 5:17-19. Paul, a former Pharisees who had been deeply dedicated to the Law and the importance of the Covenant made with Moses, is now able to see the limitations of the Mosaic Law. The Law, although glorious and important in its time, restricted the people and led to death. The New Covenant of the Holy Spirit is liberating and leads to eternal life. Today's first reading describes how more glorious the New Covenant that has come from Jesus and the Holy Spirit into the lives of the people. Thus, the Psalmist praises God for the giving of the old Law to Moses and the people of Israel. It was truly a sign of God's love for the people. In today's Gospel, Jesus announces that He has not come to destroy the Old Covenant and the word of God as proclaimed by the patriarchs and prophets. Rather, He has come to bring all that was promised to fulfillment.

The Pharisees and the teachers of the Law lost their way, misinterpreted the Law and understood it only rudimentarily, using the Law instead to impose harsh limitations and burdens on the people and using the Law to bring about control and segregation among the faithfuls. Though the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law prided themselves for being the ones who were supposedly most knowledgeable and most obedient to the Law, yet, the Lord revealed that the Law of God is the Law of Love and is intended to bring us to discover more about the Lord and to grow to love Him. The Law of God is the Law of Love, an enduring love that God has for us. God loves us so much that He did not just give us life, but also His providence and guides us through the right path, so that we may not be lost because of sin and disobedience. Therefore, it is only right that we should love Him in the same manner. Let us renew our commitment to love God and be ever more dedicated, to be ever closer to God and to follow Him in all of His ways.

May the Lord grant us His mercy and show us His steadfast love! Amen!! Good morning and have a glorious day!!!
