WCD: Bishop Odetoyinbo charges media practitioners to be agents of hopeMembers of the Media Profession; including Journalists, Broadcasters, Editors, and Presenterson June 1st, 2025 converged at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Cathedral, Itesi, Adatan road,Abeokuta, to commemorate the 59th World Communications Day.

The celebration, which was presided over by the Most Rev. Dr. Peter Olukayode Odetoyinbo,had in attendance Director of Social Communications, Rev. Fr. Gregory Fadele, his Deputy, Rev.Fr. Victor Adeosun, Assistant Cathedral Administrator, Rev. Fr. Joseph Nwopor, members of theDiocesan Communication Commission.In his homily, Bishop Odetoyinbo charged media practitioners to be mindful of their critical roleas propagators of the good news of hope to a world grappling with despair, stressing thatjournalists and communicators have a responsibility to bring hope and positivity to theiraudience, particularly in a world filled with challenges and uncertainties.At the celebration with the theme, “Share with gentleness the Hope that Is in Your Hearts’,Bishop stressed the importance of inspiring hope and avoiding aggressive language incommunication.He stressed that journalists and communicators have a responsibility to bring hope and positivityto their audience, particularly in a world filled with challenges and uncertainties.He encouraged media professionals to rise above temptations and sustain the hope that resides inChrist, guiding what comes from within them with the virtue of truth as they communicate to theoutside world.He emphasized the need for integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to truth-basedreporting in the discharge of their duties, as well as engage in humanity-focused media practice,and truth-based news reporting in promoting social development.He encouraged media professionals to use their platforms to counter societal vices and carry thegood news with gentleness and sincerity.He added that they should be conscious of the messages they deliver and to always pursue truthin their storytelling. “Let us write and speak with truth, it is the truth that sets us free,” he saidAt the symposium held at the St. Peter Hall, founder of Penpushing Media, Prince DimejiKayode-Adedeji advised media organizations to embrace the institution of Corporate SocialResponsibility (CSR) as part of their operations.Kayode-Adedeji noted that media outlets should not just stop at churning out news, but also lookinward to see how they can give back to the society and how to address as well as proffersolutions to the plights of victims being reported.He said, ‘I have noticed that as journalists, what we do is just to report news and move on andleave the fate and plights of the affected victims to the general public, and thereafter close oureyes.“I am of the opinion and view that we should not just stop at reportage, but as individual ororganizations, we should also start thinking of, after the news is reported, we should also look at

how can we solve the reported plights and not just leave the victims for the general public toaddress.Other discussants at the symposium, including Dr. Niran Malaolu, Chief Executive Officer, RockCity FM Abeokuta, who served as moderator; Stella Sawyer, Head of Public Affairs, Apple andPears Limited, and Fidelis Moses, Chief Executive Officer FPN Communications, all faulted thecurrent trend of the advent of social media which has eroded the values of professionalism andethics in journalism and media practice
