St Luke, the Evangelist

St Luke, the Evangelist

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

2 Tim. 4:10-17, Lk. 10:1-9. Today, we celebrate the feast of St Luke, “the beloved physician”, the one who accompanied Paul on his missionary journeys; who wrote the third Gospel as well as an account of the earliest Churches, that is, the Acts of the Apostles. Some special features are unique in the Gospel of Luke illustrate a loving focus on Mary, the Mother of Jesus, the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple at Jerusalem and His subsequent missing the convoy after it. Also special to the Gospel of Luke is his interest in the poor and tenderness for those who are considered weak in the society. These special folks are the models for our contemporary discipleship, as we are called to minister to others. We, contemporary disciples of Jesus Christ, have the same ministry as His disciples: to announce the Kingdom of God. We accomplish that task in myriad ways.

Each time we exercise love towards others, friends and foes alike, each call we respond to in faith, every simple kindness offered, our every growth in love, becomes a form and expression of being a disciple of Jesus. He paints a consistent portrait of Jesus as Lord and yet humble servant of the Father, to be admired and imitated. We learn the importance of piety and prayer, love and compassion for the poor and despised, as shown in Jesus’ attitude toward outsiders, towards women, children and sinners. During His crucifixion, the assurance that one of the two robbers crucified along with Jesus would be with Him in Paradise and his final words, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” continue this Lucan pattern. These examples become our joy, not a dreaded duty.

May the Lord help us to follow the example of St Luke and extend the love of God to the weak and lonely! Amen!! Good morning and have a gracious day!!!
