Not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all s accomplished

By REV. FR. SAMUEL FREDERICK

Deut. 4:1.5-9, Mt. 5:17-19. The book of Deuteronomy sets out code of laws that do not exist for it sake, but as a help for people to show their devotion to God. This book shows us that our God is closer to us than any pagan god to its devotees and God is to be loved with our heart. Today, we are challenged to make the Lord dearer to us than anything else we value in life, including life itself. Today's first reading helps us to appreciate Jesus’ reflection in today's Gospel: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets, but to fulfil them...not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.”

Jesus came to perfect the law, challenging its very nature by adding ingredients of love and compassion, even if it meant reinterpreting the law. He did not pretend to be starting from scratch. There was much in the tradition of His own people which He valued, but He wanted to bring that tradition to a greater richness and fullness; He came to renew Israel’s tradition not to replace it. The work of renewal will always involve honouring what is best in our tradition by allowing its rich potentials to be fully realized. Jesus transformed the whole law into one single immutable law, the law of love. Today's Gospel invites us to look at the way of Jesus completing the law and be recognized as great in God’s sight. “For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbour as yourself” (Gal 5:14).

May the Lord set us free from all evil and help us perfect our earthly city in justice, charity and peace! Amen!! Good morning and have a great day!!!
