Sacred Heart Hospital Commissions 25 Additional DR-TB Ward

The Health Apostolate of the Catholic Church is a continuation of the care and healing mission of Jesus Christ. Therefore, all health workers working in Catholic hospitals should attend to their duties with love and care, so that any patient that comes their way will ‘see’ healing through them.

The Bishop, Catholic Diocese of Abeokuta, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Kayode Odetoyinbo who said this during the commissioning of 25-Bedded Additional DR-TB ward extension at Sacred Heart Hospital, Lantoro, Abeokuta, noted that the church through the hospital has been adding value to humanity.

Acknowledging efforts and contributions of all stakeholders of the hospital in adding value to humanity in past years and as well in achieving the feet of the additional 25- bedded ward, Bishop Odetoyinbo assured members of staff of the hospital that the church will not relent in providing conducive atmosphere that will make the hospital to strive to greater glory.

He noted that there is no amount of money paid to health workers that can quantify their selfless service to humanity.

In his address, the Administrator, of the hospital, Rev. Fr. Simeon Akinyemi disclosed that the conventional DR-TB treatment regimen of 20 months duration has been phased out and replaced with shorter regimen of 9-11months, which comprises of an intensive phase lasting 4-6 months, and a continuation phase of 5 months.

He noted that going by the national guidelines, the intensive phase of the shorter regimen must be hospital based, positing that “to ensure that DR-TB patients in Ogun State and those from neighbouring states who prefer to come in for treatment, receive prompt attention, we took this initiative we gather to commission today: a 25 bedded ward addition to the already existing 45 bedded DR-TB Treatment Center at the Sacred Heart Hospital, Lantoro”.

He added that “this will absolutely bring about a strategic intervention that will ensure 100% of diagnosed DR-TB patents in Ogun State and beyond are enrolled for care”, stressing that the hospital will continue to support innovation, policy and research that are humanly dignifying, and give prompt, appropriate treatment and care to all diagnosed DR-TB cases.

In their separate goodwill messages, representatives of the Ogun State TB/Leprosy Officer, Demian Foundation, Belgium and other development partners commended Sacred Heart Hospital on the achievements recorded so far in her efforts towards ensuring total eradication of tuberculosis in the country.

They described the hospital as the largest treatment tuberculosis centre in Africa.

In her testimony at the ceremony, a TB Survivor, Mrs. Temitope Kamoru charged all TB patients to be faithful in taking their drugs.
