St. John Bosco Alagbole wins the 2nd Diocesan Choral Competition
We need “Catholic Choir” in the Diocese – Bishop Odetoyinbo The Choir of St. John Bosco Catholic Church, Alagbole has emerged champion of the 2nd Diocesan Choral competition organized by the Diocesan Liturgical Committee in conjunction with the Diocesan Directorate of Communications. Speaking at the competition put together as part of activities for the 20th anniversary of the Canonical Erection of the diocese held at Sacred Heart Catholic College, Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta, on January 20, 2018 the Bishop, Catholic Diocese of Abeokuta, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Odetoyinbo said plans are underway towards the establishment of a music school in Abeokuta Diocese to enhance singing ministry in the diocese. He said he has great desire for singing in the diocese, saying that he is ready to take singing to a higher pedestal in the diocese. “I have been part of choir in my seminary days. I love singing so much. I have great desire for singing in the diocese. I am ready to take you to where you want God to take you. I want to raise a choir that will go places and stand a test of time and as well be a force to reckon with anywhere in the country. He noted that choir competition would be every two years. On his part, the Head of Diocesan Liturgical Committee, Rev. Fr. Stephen Balogun appreciated the Bishop for his encouragement and support, which he said contributed to the success of the competition. He noted that the aim of the Bishop in organizing the competition was to have “Catholic Choir” in the diocese, urging all choirs in the diocese to go back to the basis and ensure that they sing in “Catholic way” In his address of welcome, the Director of Music in the Diocese, Rev. Fr. Gabriel Oyebola commended all parishes that participated in the contest, urging them to demonstrate the spirit of sportsmanship during the context. He noted that the purpose of the competition was to enhance singing in liturgical celebrations in the diocese and as well to enhance unity among all the choirs in the diocese, so that through their singing, God can minister to the congregation. Fr. Oyebola added that through the competition, a formidable choir will be formed at the diocesan level. At the end of the contest, Choirs from Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Cathedral, Itesi came 8th position, St. Rita Catholic Church, Ijaye, 7th position, S. Mary Catholic Church, Ifo was in 6th position, while Our Lady of Apostles Catholic Church, Iyana-Iyesi and Christ the King Catholic Church emerged 5th and 4th positions. The 3rd position went to Our Lady Queen of Peace, Olambe; second position went to St. Ignatius Magboro choir. The Choir from St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Magboro was adjudged best choir in Latin songs, St. Patrick Catholic Church, Aseese won the prize of “Best appearance”, while St. John Bosco Catholic Church, Alagbole got prizes as “Best Soloist”, “Best in interpreting Yoruba songs and “Best Conductor”. .
